The Power of being an Innovative Achiever & Storyteller

In the journey of elementary school, being an achiever looks different in every grade. The level of achievement grows year by year with the end goal of reaching high school graduation.

For Dwight Elementary 4th grader, Dorothy Yarbrough, goals and aspirations reach outside of academic knowledge. Whether it's helping friends with classwork, leading with positivity, or bringing laughter, Dorothy sure knows how to achieve greatness.

Dwight Elementary Principal, Krista Malin, says “Dorothy stands out in such a positive way at our school.  I’ve never seen her without a smile on her face.  She displays integrity, selflessness, and a servant’s heart in all that she does.  She is a role model for others in and out of our school.”

Every day, students take turns to lead the class in sharing good things as a way to bring positivity and help build relationships in the classroom. Dorothy has been a great leader in this effort. “I like to lead good things because I can celebrate with my friends,” said Dorothy.

During School Board Appreciation month in January, Dorothy was included in a series of videos where she interviewed RSD school board members. In every interview, Dorothy not only helped the board members tell their stories, but her ambition, kindness, and humor shined through as well. Dorothy was definitely the star of the show!

School Board President, Jeremy D. Keaster commented, “Dorothy is a great example of kindness and dedication all RSD students should possess in their journey to adulthood and beyond. My interview with her was the pinnacle of my time serving students at RSD. I am proud she is a Cyclone!”

Dorothy says she would like to be a Nursing Home Activity Director when she grows up, which would fit her knack of helping others and showing kindness. Dorothy is a great example of all the great attributes leaders must possess in order to be difference makers. As her educational journey continues, there is no doubt with her goodwill and ambition, Dorothy will have a bright future.

Dorothy was recognized at the January RSD Board of Education Meeting for being an Innovative Achiever! This recognition comes from the RSD Profile of the Graduate, which outlines the attributes RSD graduates will encompass when they graduate.
