In education, thinking critically can often be the difference between proficiency, extension, or remediation. In all class subjects, there are areas where some skills are more easily mastered than others.
For Russellville High School student Crawford Rash, critical thinking comes easy. No task, assignment, question, or skill is too large for his perseverance.
Crawford is among one of just 16,000 academically talented high school students in the nation to be named a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist. Semifinalists are qualified based on their performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). This is just one testament to his strong thinking and excellence in problem-solving.
Crawford’s success reaches outside of the classroom as he is also a member of the State Champion Cyclones Quiz Bowl team and the Cyclones Robotics team. Both competitions test students' ability to creatively find solutions to a variety of problems and challenge students to demonstrate high-level analytical thinking.
Crawford commented, “Critically thinking has helped me refocus on the different paths to success as challenges have come up.” Crawford says he approaches critical thinking as a way of analyzing and separating feelings from choices and information presented to make the best decisions possible.
Crawford was recognized at the February RSD Board of Education Meeting for being a Critical Thinker! This recognition comes from the RSD Profile of the Graduate, which outlines the attributes RSD graduates will encompass when they graduate.
